What is Flu?

An airborne disease of viral origin that causes symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and nasal congestion. The high transmissibility and great mutability of viruses make it impossible to eradicate.

The importance of prevention

With an annual number of cases ranging from 350 million to 1 billion, it is a disease that can cause serious complications in at-risk individuals and the elderly. Its great antigenic variability prevents the development of permanent protection; therefore, it is important to protect oneself annually with the vaccine.

The vaccine

Trade name:

Fluarix tetra / Vaxigrip tetra

The vaccination schedule calls for 2 doses 4 weeks apart for children between 6 months and 9 years of age. Above 9 years of age, 1 dose is sufficient.

All vaccines available in Italy have inactivated virus.

It is administered intramuscularly

The most common side effects (with an incidence of 1 to 10 percent) are injection site pain and redness, malaise, fever, and muscle aches.

In some cases, symptoms such as decreased blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia), neuralgia, paresthesias, and allergic reactions have occurred in conjunction with the vaccine. However, it should be remembered that a link between the vaccine and these events has not yet been identified.

Vaccination should be postponed if high fever is present. It should be avoided if severe allergic reactions to the vaccine or any of its components have occurred in the past.

During pregnancy and lactation, it is important to consult with a specialist to consider postponing administration.
