PROTECTING THOSE WHO TRAVEL: A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Risks are increasing for expatriates

The increasing international mobility of workers, often to remote or risky destinations, makes accurate and proactive risk assessment essential. Endemic illnesses, extreme working conditions and security threats require targeted preventive management to protect the health and safety of employees. Careful planning, taking into account the specifics of each destination and the individual needs of each worker, is critical to preventing accidents, illnesses and other emergencies.

THE EMPLOYER'S RESPONSIBILITY

Protecting health and safety

Employment in remote or hostile locations can negatively impact employees. Employers have a duty of care to take all preventive measures to protect their employees, even when they are away. Violation of the duty of care can result in serious legal and reputational consequences for the company. It is essential, therefore, that companies implement effective health and safety management systems that comply with current regulations and provide their employees with adequate tools to meet the challenges associated with international mobility.

In addition, the transferee will go over the emergency procedure to be implemented in case of need (who to call, what tools are at his or her disposal, etc.).
The purpose of the discussion is to provide proper information and training so that the employee develops greater awareness about the risks associated with his or her travel.

When preparing for a trip to a client or supplier, planning a new foreign corporate headquarters or a construction site at a remote site, an assessment of neighboring health and hotel facilities from both a safety and medical perspective (at least European standards) should not be missing. With a team of experienced consultants, Ambimed conducts a preliminary analysis remotely using digital tools and then, if specifically requested by the client, performs an on-site audit to confirm that each and every facility meets the stated standards set forth in the company's internal procedures.

Development of a specific health protocol for the foreign countries where the company develops its business.

All endemic diseases of the target nations are considered and individual exposure risks are assessed based on the work activities that will be performed. In the document, all preventive actions useful for protecting the health of the expatriate are determined, whether informational (pre-travel medical induction) or pharmacological (vaccination or prophylaxis).

Together with the RSPP and the employer, the preventive system can be implemented with international standards that provide for the Medical Fitness Certificate: a specific medical examination that issues the individual employee's fitness to travel around the world or, in the case of clinical attention, limits his or her international travel perimeter.
